Glossary

Agencies: This refers to any individual or agency that it would be beneficial for the applying organisation to work with, for example neighbours, organisations experiencing similar problems or the police.

Crime prevention: Reducing the risk of occurrence and potential seriousness of crime and disorder events by intervening in their causes.

Designated person: This refers to the person in the organisation with specific responsibility for security.

Employees: This refers to all staff within the company from front line workers to executive officers.

Evaluation: Involves assessing the effectiveness of a security measure in achieving its objectives.

Initiative: This refers to any crime prevention or security activity, project or measure.

Intervention: This refers to any measure or activity in place to reduce crime or increase security.

Monitoring: This refers to observing and possibly recording performance of a measure or intervention.

Nominated lead: This refers to the nominated person within the senior management team with overall responsibility for security.

Objective: A tangible aim or goal.

Risk: A possible event or circumstance that can have negative effects on the organisations secure environment.

Security: Measures taken as a precaution against crime or anti social behaviour.

Security incidents: An incident of crime or disorder for example burglary, vandalism or trespass.

Security measure: This has a similar meaning to intervention and refers to any activity or tool in place to reduce the opportunity for crimes or disorder to occur.

Senior management team: This refers to the senior managers in the organisation such as the management board including company directors, heads of departments or executive officers.
